FAQ

What is a neuropsychologist?

A neuropsychologist is a psychologist who specializes in the relationship(s) between how people think and behave and how their brain works.

What is a neuropsychological assessment?

A neuropsychological assessment is an in-depth assessment that helps determine strengths and weaknesses in thinking skills and brain function, such as attention, language, visuospatial skills, memory, and problem-solving.

What happens at an appointment for a neuropsychological assessment?

The client, accompanied if desired by a close family member or friend, is asked questions about their symptoms and background by the neuropsychologist. A series of pencil/paper and computerized tests and/or questionnaires are completed. The assessment typically lasts an entire day with a break for lunch.

How does a neuropsychological assessment help?

Results of a neuropsychological assessment are used to help diagnosis neurocognitive disorders (such as dementia), monitor changes in thinking over time (such as recovery from a brain injury or stroke), and plan treatment. Recommended treatments may include rehabilitation strategies, education about neurocognitive conditions, psychotherapy, or further assessment in other areas (e.g., functional assessment). The information from a neuropsychological assessment is often used to guide other treating health care professionals in planning rehabilitation programs.
